The Little Truckee has seen some consistent BWO hatches around mid-day recently. There is still ample opportunity to throw dry-flies to some quality wild fish right now before the snow sets in and blocks off access to the LT. Consider carrying emerger patterns that are designed to be fished just beneath the surface to rising fish. Having an accurate presentation and a good match for the small baetis-flies hatching in the afternoon is crucial for success out here. Consider carrying two set ups with you – an indicator rig and a dry fly rig. Again, take your time working water that you believe is holding fish. If fish are rising, consider positioning yourself upstream and using a reach-cast to make a delicate presentation. The reach cast will help put a mend your in line without sinking a delicate dry fly and taking it out of the strike zone or making it appear unnatural to the fish. If fishing a small dry, consider using a “two-treatment system” to help your fly float high and dry. Apply a small amount of hydrophobic gel, such as Gink, before you start fishing. As your fly becomes water logged, touch it up with a desiccant powder or “dry-shake” to keep it floating well. It’s these subtle details that can make all the difference between having a great day and getting skunked on the LT.
