The past week of fishing on the Truckee was excellent. We were fishing in sun hoodies and casting all the way until dark comfortably. Needless to say, this really made us look forward to the coming months. The water stayed mostly clear even though Truckee hit the mid-60’s and Reno in the low-70’s. As expected, we saw a good smattering of skwalas along the entire river. Tossing the adults out there under a nymph dropper right now is a fun way to fish the big river. Indicator fishing or tight line nymphing have both been almost equally effective as the fish have begun to spread out a bit more, with some still holding in the slow stuff and others found in faster water. The other typical late winter bugs such as baetis, midges, winter stones, worms and eggs are all fishing great as well. We expect a bit of a slowdown in the action this week as the weather gets cold and wet once again, but it’s hard to complain about the prospect of more snow on the hill during a year like this.
