The Truckee River is flowing between 800-950cfs at the Reno gauge. Despite the somewhat high flows, fishing has picked up significantly in the last week. Water temperatures are increasing, peaking in the high 50s to low 60s in the afternoon. We are beginning to see multiple hatches of our favorite summer bugs. The best fishing has been best between 9am and 1pm most days.
Nymph fishing has provided plenty of opportunities as of late. Yellow Sally Stoneflies, caddis, PMD’s, and a few green drakes are active at the moment and can be fished with success. Fish are spread out in different water types but we’ve noticed a shift of fish into the faster water in the last week. Target fast seems with 1-3’ of depth when the bugs get going late morning.
The streamer bite has also picked up with larger browns beginning to feed on large food items. It took a while to start up this year, but they are hungry and looking for a big meal. With flows between 800-950 cfs, fish have been holding close to the bank in ambush spots near structure. Cover water quickly and present the fly to as many likely spots as you can. While evening is a good time to streamer fish, the early afternoon has been surprisingly productive even on the sunny days. Summer is here and the fish are ready!
In the evenings, large swaths of adult caddis can be seen along the river banks. Yellow sallies are making a regular appearance and we are coming into some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. If you experience a dual hatch of caddis and Yellow Sallies but can’t figure out which one the fish might be eating, try a new fly pattern here in the shop. The Missing Link is a suggestive dry fly that looks like a lot of different adult summertime bugs. Warm summer evenings will raise fish up to the surface as long as it isn’t windy. Look for tailouts, eddies, and slow slicks where fish can feed on the surface.
We have availability for walk/wade and float trips on the Truckee throughout June. Join us for a day on the water you won’t forget.
