Hello fellow anglers. As many of us will be out this weekend celebrating our nation's 249th birthday. Yes, it is a day of celebration, but not to take it too far. There are many places in our local areas that will have safe areas with bbqs and firework shows. But when we are out camping, some take it a little too far and bring a few fireworks with them. Just to let you know. In California and Nevada. If you're caught with them, you may be fined $1000 and possibly time in the hoosegow. Let's just fish , camp and enjoy friends and family this weekend.
Now I do know of a place in Alpine County that really likes to celebrate. Starting Friday evening the Carson River Resort will be hosting their annual bbq and live music. At 5pm the Lost Reverends will start playing until the crowd thins out. The menu will consist of sloppy joe's and pork shoulder sliders with all the fixin's for a nominal fee of $15 a plate. But then on Saturday, it all starts again at 2pm with Wesley Orsolic until 5pm when Moxie Ruckus takes over until 8:30 or so. With more bbq. They will also be having a fish weigh in starting at noon on Friday and ending on Saturday at 6pm. where prizes will be given out. This is open to all who want to attend. If you want to eat, or just come for the music. I have to tell you, the pork shoulder is out of this world. I can still taste it from last year. Now if you're just going for the music. They have a new item inside the store that I am embarrassed to say, is maybe a little better than our recipe. Try their smoked fish, it's made right there at the resort. Ask for Carson River Smoke.
Now for those going out to do some camping. You may be too late to make reservations anywhere. But there are plenty of places that do not include hookups or a store. Just plain ole mother nature. Always make sure wherever you camp that you leave it like when you arrived. And if you're not in a designated campground. No open fires are allowed. Propane or pellet stoves only. We don't need any more wildfires. For those getting out, Saturday the 4th is free fishing day in California and here is your local fishing report.
SILVER LAKE : The fishing has been slow with a few small rainbows and a couple 2-3 lb macs being caught.
CAPLES LAKE: The resort is open. They offer boat rentals and launching. Last week a fellow angler caught a nice 20lb lake trout. Other anglers have been doing well from shore or trolling. Small flashers and a crawler or Rapalas have been most productive. The lake was planted recently by the CDFG. Best areas have been from the resort to Woods Creek area and along the rocks. Use extreme caution if you venture into purgatory cove. There are huge rocks that can damage your boat. For more information go to caplelakeresort.com .
WOODS LAKE: The lake is open and fishing has been fair. Flys or salmon eggs have been most productive. They have limited camping facilities. The lake is scheduled to be planted next week by the CDFG.
BURNSIDE LAKE: The road is open and the drive is slow going. Primitive camping and fishing has been fair for anglers using Kastmasters or Panther Martin Spinners.
BLUE LAKES: The road is open to the lower lake only at this time. Primitive camping and the fishing has been fair to good. The CDFG planted the lake last week with catchable rainbows. Special note, No gasoline motors are allowed. Electric, wind or human powered only
UPPER AND LOWER SUNSET LAKES: Fishing has been fair to good early morning or late afternoon for brook trout. Spinners or salmon eggs are most productive. Primitive campground at the end of the lower lake.
CARSON RIVER EAST FORK ALPINE COUNTY: Fishing has been good for anglers that want to do a little walking. Elizabeth Alspaw caught a nice 3.14 rainbow last week. The county has planted the river a couple times over the last month. I used a Panther Martin on my last trip and the second cast, I had one on. There will be a lot of lines in the water this weekend, use patience. For more information stop by the Carson River Resort.
CARSON RIVER WEST FORK ALPINE COUNTY: The river is running low right now. If you do some walking out in Hope Valley. You can pick up a couple. The Woodfords Canyon is running perfectly. Most anglers have fished by the old bridge or down towards Woodfords.
CARSON RIVER NEVADA: The river was recently planted by NDOW at the Deer Run bridge and the Carson City Park Bridge.
EAST WALKER RIVER NEVADA: The NDOW recently planted the river near the elbow in Lyon County with catchable rainbow trout.
SILVER CREEK ALPINE COUNTY: The river was planted last month by the county and is scheduled to be planted next week by CDFG. Fishing has been fair. I would plan on a little walking to try out a few stretches or eddies. Drifting salmon eggs has been productive.
MARKLEEVILLE CREEK ALPINE COUNTY: The fishing has been good for anglers using power eggs. Either red or green. Please remember that there is a lot of private property and to be respectful when fishing this area.
TOPAZ LAKE: The lake has been very good in the early morning hours on the south end and the west side. Rapalas or small flashers and a worm or using a thomas buoyant spoon. When using a spoon, use a small snap swivel. If you don't, you will end up with a twisted mess. For those die hard anglers that fish all day. Fish the east and the south end. As the sun comes up the fish go deeper and are slower to respond. You will need to get your prentatation down a little deeper. Be cautious of the willow beed on the south end and look for the drop off and follow it east to west. As a note, if you don't have enough life jackets for all on board. They have a life jacket loaner station at the Douglas County Park boat launch.
KIDS FISHING DERBY: On July 19th, there will be a kids free fishing at Alpine Lake.
Good luck on your next fishing adventure. Take your time getting to your destination. If you get a picture of your catch, send it to sports@recordcourier.com. I hope to see you on the waters soon. Good fishin' and tight Lines.
