This next week is shaping up to be classic mid-summer fishing on the Day Stretch. The big bugs are long gone, but the trout haven’t stopped feeding—PMDs and Caddis are the name of the game right now. We’re seeing solid Caddis activity mid-morning through evening, and the PMDs are popping steadily in the afternoon. If you’re planning a trip, focus your dry fly efforts on those lower light windows—early and late are going to be the most productive.
Caddis dries like X-Caddis, Missing Links, and Elk Hairs in #14–16 are moving fish along the banks and seams. When you start seeing rises, it’s game on. On the PMD side, keep a few Sparkle Duns or CDC patterns in the box for the afternoon slot—especially if you find fish suspended in the softer water.
During the heat of the day, the subsurface game is what’s keeping rods bent. Euro and indicator rigs are both fishing well. Perdigons, Soft Hackle PTs, Fire Starters, 2 Bit Hookers, and Sparkle Pupae are all doing work. Focus on faster seams, deeper buckets, and transition water between riffles and pools. Don’t be afraid to swing a soft hackle in the last hour of light either—fish are getting grabby when the bugs are moving.
The weather looks favorable for the next several days—cooler mornings, highs in the low 80s, and light winds. Flows are stable and clear, and with the holiday rush tapering off by Monday, pressure should ease a bit.
If you want to put fish in the net this week, keep things simple: dry-dropper in the mornings, nymph mid-day, and commit to the evening rise with a small dry and good drift. This stretch is in its groove right now.
