Current Water Conditions

The Truckee is in prime shape this week, especially for anglers willing to hit the water before the midday heat. Crisp mornings are delivering hungry trout and ideal conditions. Flows are holding steady at 301 CFS out of Tahoe City, 335 CFS through Truckee, and 549 CFS at Farad—perfect for both wading and floating. The canyon is fishing especially well with nearly perfect flows. Keep a thermometer handy, and once water temps hit 68°F, it’s time to call it for the day. With warmer days ahead, staying mindful of temps will be key.

Water Temperatures

Mornings start in the low 60s°F, climbing into the mid-to-upper 60s°F by late afternoon. The bite is best before lunch, with midday temps averaging around 66°F.

Hatches

PMDs are popping around 10am, caddis take over after 6pm, and there’s an active morning midge hatch. Look for the best surface action at first light and again near sunset.

Effective Tactics

Tightline nymphing in riffles and seams, indicator rigs in tailouts, and dry-dropper setups on 5x leader are all producing. Early and late, dries are hot, and canyon streamers are moving big browns.

Catch Report

Steady action for rainbows and browns in the 12–16” range around Glenshire, Hirschdale, and the canyon, with some browns pushing 20” in the deep canyon pools. Early mornings are hot, and the evening dry fly bite is a great closer.

Fly Box Must-Haves

Caddis Emergers (#16), Green Rockworms (#16), Squirmy Worms (#16), Elk Hair Caddis (#16), E/C Caddis (#12-14), Pheasant Tails (#14-18), Beadless Pheasant Tails (#16), Split Case PMDs (#16), Brown San Juan Worms (#12), Juju Baetis (#18)
