The Metolius has settled into its fall rhythm—cool mornings, crystal-clear water, and fish feeding steadily through the middle of the day. Midges are the main focus right now, and small, dark patterns are producing best. Think Zebra Midges in black, red, or purple, sizes 18–22, paired with a subtle emerger or small perdigon. Fish are holding tight in seams, tailouts, and along the slower edges, so keep your drifts clean and natural.
Caddis and PMD remnants are still around during the warmer afternoons, giving brief windows for small dries like Parachute Adams, Purple Haze, and X-Caddis. Trout are quick to key in when bugs start to move, so it’s worth carrying a few high-floating patterns in your pocket just in case.
Bull trout remain active, especially in the canyon and lower sections. Stripping or swinging streamers—Sculpzillas, articulated leeches, or other heavy patterns—through deep buckets or behind structure can produce some violent takes. Fish early or late for your best odds.
Overall, the Metolius is in a great fall groove. The water’s cold, the crowds have thinned, and the fish are feeding with purpose. Bring a mix of tiny midges, nymphs, and big meaty streamers, and you’ll have the whole spectrum covered.
