The lake held close to 82 percent of capacity, and water temps fell into the mid and low seventies. There are still boils throughout the lake, and the best time to get in on the action has been as soon as the lake opens. Striped bass seemed to boil a little later in the morning. Almost any shad patterned topwater lure has been productive with enough casts, and small white Flukes tossed right into the boils have been productive as well. Anglers never know if they’ll hook up with a two pound bass or a five pound striper. Local guide, Dave Horst, reported putting clients on four to eight pound striped bass in the Ski Arm. Bait anglers fooled striper while soaking cut sardines, and lugworms near the West Ramp. For largemouth anglers who prefer to fish deeper in the water column it’s been all about shad, brown, or green pumpkin colored finesse baits on the drop shot or Carolina rigged. Jerkbaits scored plenty of bites for bass anglers who found the right cadence.
