Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
The Metolius is in a really good place right now and feels about as “late spring” as it gets. Flows are steady, water clarity is excellent, and the warmer afternoons have (and will continue to) increase bug activity.
PMDs are becoming the main event during the afternoons and Caddis activity has also picked up, with fish actively feeding during the better hatch windows. Cooler mornings are still producing a few BWOs, but the river is shifting deeper into its summer rhythm.
Nymphing continues to be the most reliable approach day to day. Golden stones, caddis pupa, perdigons, jigged mayfly patterns, and smaller attractor nymphs are all producing fish consistently. Focus on pocket water, seams, and softer edges where fish are holding and feeding comfortably.
Dry fly opportunities continue to improve with the warm holiday weekend forecast, especially during afternoon PMD activity and evening caddis windows. Bull trout fishing has also remained solid for anglers covering deeper structure with streamers.
Suggested Dries:
March Brown #12-14, Purple Haze #16-20, PMD Sparkle Dun #16-18, Elk Hair Caddis #14-18, Parachute Adams #16-20, CDC PMD Emerger #16-18
Suggested Nymphs:
Golden Stone Nymphs #8-10, Brown Jimmy Legs #8-12, Jigged Hare’s Ear #14-16, Jigged Pheasant Tail #14-16, Copper John #16-18, Lightning Bug #14-18, Sparkle Pupa #16-18, Olive Perdigon #16-18
