The flows on the Little Truckee came down slightly this week, from 650 to 550 CFS as of today. This isn’t much of a decrease and will not really change how you would fish out here. The name of the game with this amount of water would be to indicator fish or tight line nymph. Streamer fishing at these flows is also an option. The dry fly bite may still be good in certain spots, but these will be few and far between, so you will likely find better results throughout the day with other methods. There will still be some fish spawning on the little river, although it appears that the bulk of activity has tapered off. Please still proceed out here with caution and avoid fishing to or around spawning fish or walking around their redds. Like on the main river, we have really seen more summer bugs take over in the last few weeks, and anglers should be sure to carry plenty of PMDs, green drakes and caddis when fishing the LT. Keep in mind that the green drakes typically happen later out here than they do on the Truckee, so odds are we will see some days of good hatches from these monster mayflies in the near future. With the flows running this high, some bigger attractor nymphs such as green drakes, stoneflies or crawdads will be a good bet, especially for those of you that like to fish fast and cover water. With fishing being good all day, consider fishing here at odd times to avoid the crowds. This also goes the same with sections of the river; because of high flows, the fish will be sitting in some different areas than normal. Now is a good time to spread out and try so different sections of river that may not hold lots of fish during typical water levels.
