General Information: The Hex is on! Fishing is good to great all day long (especially if the wind isn't blowing). There are still a few PMDs hatching in the upper river there have been some good hatches of Callibaetis mayflies as well. Nymphing small mayfly nymphs and zug bugs under small indicators will usually produce some good fish, but the real deal getting started below the Tule is the big bugs: Hexagenia Limbata!
Fishing Conditions & Hatches: This is probably the most popular time of the year and the reason why is spelled HEX. It seems like the hatch begins as soon as it is too dark to tye on your fly. Fortunatly it is a huge fly so the task is not as tough as it could be. They were a litte late arriving this year so we should have good fishing the next few weeks. For you early birds have a few tricos and small dark caddis that begin around 7:00 until the hex starts to get active.
Flies:
?Ģ Loco Hex # 6
?Ģ Quigley's Hex Cripple #6
?Ģ Fox's Shuck Hex #6
?Ģ Mercer's Rag Hex #6
?Ģ Quigleys PMD Spider Variant
?Ģ Mercer's Micro May #18-20
?Ģ Hale Bopp Leechs (olive & black)
The Fly Shop's Tips: ??The "Fall River Twitch" has been the most effective technique on Fall River for decades. Anchor your pram upstream of rising fish. Cast downstream and across, then feed line out to extend your drift a long ways downstream. This way the fish see your fly first, and enables a precise presentation without spooking the fish. If you're casting to a pod of rising trout, work from the outside in and you can often pick them off one by one.
