The Provo River is one of Utah’s flagship fisheries, offering varied and productive trout fishing across its Upper, Middle, and Lower sections. Each section provides a unique angling experience.
The Upper Provo, near Kamas, features wild brook, rainbow, and cutthroat trout in a mountain stream setting. Dry flies such as hoppers and caddis are highly effective during summer.
The Middle Provo, a blue-ribbon tailwater between Jordanelle and Deer Creek Reservoirs, is renowned for its technical dry fly and nymph fishing. Brown and rainbow trout average 14–18 inches, with excellent access and year-round productivity.
The Lower Provo, flowing into Utah Lake, is a productive tailwater fishery known for wild browns and stocked rainbows. It remains fishable even in winter due to stable water temperatures.
Regulations vary: the Middle and Lower sections require artificial flies and lures only, and both enforce a two-trout daily limit. The Upper Provo follows general statewide rules.
With excellent access, consistent hatches, and healthy trout populations, the Provo River is a must-visit fishery for fly anglers and spin fishermen alike. Always consult the Utah Fishing Guidebook for current rules and conditions.
