Road access to Ashurst Lake and campgrounds is open, but no camp host is present at the lake. The FR82 road from FH3 (Lake Mary Road) typically closes sometime in December. Water clarity is good. Rainbow trout were stocked last week. Small lures are working well when fished slowly from shore or trolled from a boat. Flies like Simi-seal leeches, wooly buggers, crayfish patterns, Prince Nymph, and pheasant tails should work well. PowerBait and corn will no doubt also work well. The lake level is low, but launching a small boat is possible. Senior Aquatic Wildlife Specialist Matthew Rinker was able to get his 14-foot aluminum boat on a trailer in and out without incident, but he did have to dodge some large exposed boulders. It would be wise to walk the ramp and plan your route before you back your boat up. Only boats with a 10-horsepower motor or less are allowed on Ashurst Lake. Ice is forming overnight on parts of the lake, but has been melting off by mid-day.
