Well, this time it's my son Albert and me heading out for some river fishing.
We're leaving the marina and making our way through the canal that leads to the Colorado River. This time of year, shore fishing is doing well. Anchovies are producing stripers, and swim baits are working too. I like using something in a trout pattern, but white and yellow are always great go-to colors. Add a red head to the white, and it really produces.

For you shore anglers using bait, it's usually a good idea to fish just off the shoreline—not too deep. This is where the stripers cruise the shallows, looking for food. Anchovies are a great bait option. I like to cut them into thirds and use some bait wrap thread to help hold the pieces on the hook. As the frozen anchovies start to soften, that wrap thread really does the trick.

Sometimes, I’ll even double up on the bait—especially when the smaller stripers are running, which is happening now, along with a few bigger ones in the mix. I find that about a 1-ounce weight works well, since you're not casting far into the current.

Hook size can vary depending on what you have in your tackle box, but I like anything from a #2 to a 2/0 size. I prefer circle octopus or Kahele hooks—they both work great.
