The Los Vaqueros record for rainbow trout has been shattered for the second time in just over a month. On Saturday, Fernando Gonzalez of San Lorenzo caught the largest rainbow ever to come out of the reservoir just north of Livermore when he used a gold Kastmaster to lure a 16.42 pound trout. Gonzalez was fishing from the shore of South Cove. Gonzalez' catch beats the previous record set Dec. 20 by David Bixler of San Jose, who also used a Kastmaster from the South Cove shoreline to catch a 13.72 pound trout. Before Gonzalez and Bixler made their catches this winter, the record had stood for five years. Gonzalez' record wasn't the only big fish to come out of the reservoir located just north of Livermore. A 21.35 pound striped bass was landed by Randall Scott of Rio Vista, who was trolling with a silver Kastmaster. This week, Steve Tabuchi of San Jose caught a 10.58 pound rainbow from a boat in Cowboy Cove with Power Bait. Other notable catches of late include: Michael Rose of Fremont, who caught an 11.6 pound rainbow trout from Quarry Lakes using an eight-inch plug ... Mark Silva had a great day at Contra Loma last week. Silva landed an 11.7 pound catfish and a 7.7 pound rainbow trout, both on white Power Eggs ... Shawn Lee of Fremont nailed a 9.52 pound trout at Lake Chabot using chartreuse Power Bait at Raccoon Point .. At Pyramid Lake in Nevada, Gary Zahniser of Sparks last week caught a 21.24 cutthroat with a jig at Blockhouse. It was the third time this season Zahniser caught the fish of the week. He also has landed a 21 pounder earlier in the season and a 16 pounder two weeks ago. Big Stringer: Two teenagers, Mario of Galt and Beau from Valley Springs, filled a stringer with six trout weighing a total of 42.8 pounds while fishing from Chevron Point on the South Shore of Lake Camanche. The lads were using white Power Worms. Big Bass: John Chiarpotti caught-and-released a 14.75 pound largemouth at New Melones with a California Reservoir Lure ... Ed Gantan caught-and-released a 13.10 pound largemouth from Contra Loma Reservoir in Antioch. Gantan was using an AC plug ... An employee of Coyote Bait & Tackle in San Jose last week caught-and-released a 9 pound bass at Coyote Reservoir.
