The Truckee continued to fish well through this last storm and we expect it to stay that way for the near future. This last late-season storm is great to see, helping bolster our late season snowpack and will only help the cause for those imminent hot mid-summer days. Once we see some consistently warm weather, the run off should be quick to follow and the tactics will change. There will still be fishing to be had! The main bugs right now will be skwalas, baetis, midges and winter stones. We are also beginning to see some caddis larvae at lower elevations, as well as some green drake nymphs and a few yellow sallies. Spring is here and now is a good time to mix up your fly selection a bit from the typical winter bugs to see what the fish are keying in on. While we are still seeing most fish hanging in the slower water, probing the occasional medium speed run can pay off from time to time. When fishing skwala or baetis dries, your best bet will remain in those slower buckets, tail outs, or the ends of slow deep riffles. Fishing will be good all day, but we have still been doing best in the early afternoons. If you only have a morning or late evening to fish, it’s certainly still worth getting out there. We would also like to note that we have began to see redds along the Truckee River as high up as Glenshire. Please remain aware of where you are wading. Avoid stepping on, or anywhere near, these oval shaped clearings on gravel bars. Even more importantly, do not fish to these spawning fish and help keep our wild trout populations viable as this is a nearly 100% wild trout fishery. Giving these fish their space during this time of year is paramount to their success. If you ever have any questions about the best policies or practices of fishing during this time of year, don’t hesitate to reach out, we’re always happy to help explain!
