At River Walk, the City of Bakersfield recently removed the overgrown weeds around the lake, greatly improving access and overall fishability. Bass activity has been picking up, with the best bite occurring during the early morning and late evening hours. Anglers are finding success with small flukes, Ned rigs, shad-style plastics on drop shot, and green pumpkin Senkos. Bluegill are also being caught at both lakes on wax worms and red worms. Looking ahead, the Bakersfield Firefighters 13th Annual Trout Derby and Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for November 22, 2025. Over a thousand pounds of lightning and rainbow trout—some up to 5 pounds—will be stocked for the event, and the angler who lands the lowest tagged trout will take home the $1,000 grand prize.
