The Upper Kern River saw a fresh plant of trout this week by the CDFW, with Section 5 (Fairview Dam to Lazy River Lodge) receiving fish. Trout fishing has been steady, especially for anglers targeting slower eddies and deeper pools around river bends. Salmon eggs, trout jigs, and spinners have all been producing consistent results. In the Lower Kern, trout are being caught throughout the canyon, with the best numbers coming from the Democrat area. As in the upper stretches, trout jigs, salmon eggs, and spinners continue to be the top-producing baits. Bass fishing has also been excellent in the lower river, with both smallmouth and largemouth bass hitting jigs, plastic worms, and small crankbaits. Catfish are active as well, with cut sardines and SSS Dip Bait drawing steady bites. As of this report, the Upper Kern River is flowing at 2,036 CFS, while the Lower Kern is running at 1,470 CFS. Flows are strong but manageable, and the fishing remains solid for multiple species.
