The Crooked is fishing well as we slide into late fall. Cold mornings have the fish pretty sleepy early, but once things warm up around late morning the river comes alive. Midday has been the most productive window, with trout settling into softer edges, slower seams, and the deeper buckets. Flows have been steady and clarity is great, so it’s been classic small-bug nymphing out there — think scuds, zebra midges, perdigons, and other sparse patterns in the #16–20 range. Expect to clean moss off your rig now and then, but nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year. Dry fly opportunities are still popping up when the midges get going, especially on overcast afternoons; a small Griffith’s Gnat or midge cluster will pick off the occasional riser. Euro rigs continue to shine with their ability to stay tight and cover those winter lanes efficiently. Overall, it’s been solid, steady fall fishing on the Crooked — nothing crazy, but good numbers and great conditions for November. Let us know if you plan to head out and need help stocking the small-bug box.
