The Upper Kern River continues to provide good fishing opportunities, with flows hovering around 600 CFS, making conditions moderate and fishable throughout much of the river. The CDFW has continued stocking trout along the popular 20-mile stretch above Kernville, and anglers are reporting consistent success using both bait and artificial lures. Salmon eggs, garlic-scented PowerBait in chartreuse and orange, crickets, and small spinners such as Rooster Tails and Panther Martins are all producing fish. Fly anglers are also enjoying good action with attractor nymphs, streamers, and dry flies, particularly during the late afternoon insect hatches. The most productive approach has been targeting slower runs, pockets, and eddies behind rocks where trout are seeking refuge from the current. The Lower Kern River is flowing much stronger at approximately 2,000 CFS, creating challenging and potentially hazardous wading conditions in some areas, so bank fishing is highly recommended. Despite the higher flows, anglers continue to catch trout on salmon eggs, garlic PowerBait, and small spinners. Smallmouth bass activity is increasing in the lower river, especially around rocky structure, eddies, and slower-moving water. Soft plastics, curly-tail grubs, and small swimbaits in natural patterns are proving effective for bass.
