Lake Isabella is currently sitting at around 64% capacity, with water temperatures ranging between 70 and 74 degrees. Fishing conditions have been excellent, especially for bass and crappie. The bass bite has been phenomenal, with anglers reporting solid action around Rocky Point, Engineers Point, the “3 Crosses” area, and Lime Dyke. Bass are being found in 6 to 20 feet of water, and a variety of baits have been producing. Green pumpkin creature baits, green pumpkin jigs, purple worms, craw-pattern crankbaits, Rapala jerkbaits in shad or blue hues, chatterbaits, and big swimbaits have all been effective in drawing strikes. The crappie bite remains strong, especially in 20 to 30 feet of water near submerged brush and dock structures—mini-jigs, small swimbaits, and live shiners are working well, particularly when using sonar to locate schools. Catfish action has picked up in the evenings and at night, with deeper coves and creek channels producing solid catches. Cut baits, nightcrawlers, chicken liver, and clams have been the top producers. Shore and boat anglers are both finding success. Trout fishing continues to hold up nicely, particularly near the cemetery and the North Fork area. Early mornings have been best, with Powerbait, nightcrawlers, and spoons drawing strikes. Bluegill are active in the shallows near the French Gulch Marina and can be caught on small worms or insect baits.
