The Upper Kern River trout bite has tapered off from the hot action seen over the past month, but there are still opportunities for those willing to work a bit harder. Anglers are finding success targeting holdover and wild trout in deeper pools and higher elevations, particularly above Fairview. Salmon eggs, natural-colored trout jigs, and inline spinners like Panther Martins continue to be effective, especially during the early morning or late evening hours when water temps are cooler. A few brown trout were caught this week in the 20-mile stretch. Fly anglers are picking off a few fish with nymphs and dry-dropper rigs in the shaded seams. Meanwhile, the Lower Kern River continues to produce excellent Smallmouth Bass action. The bite has been consistent, with anglers reporting solid hookups on double-tail grubs rigged on finesse jig heads, Roostertails, and small crankbaits worked through current breaks and eddies. The warm water has the bass in an aggressive mood, and rocky stretches or areas near structure have been holding fish. Catfish are also showing in the Lower Kern and will take many of the same offerings as the bass, particularly in the slower, deeper runs. Anglers using cut baits, dip baits, or even nightcrawler under a slip rig are finding steady action in the evenings and at night.
