The CDFW stocked trout last week along the 20-mile stretch of the Upper Kern River, and anglers have been reporting solid action. Trout are hitting on salmon eggs, jigs, and nightcrawlers, while fly anglers are finding success with nymphs and dry-dropper rigs. Last week’s trout plants included Section 4 (Riverside Park in Kernville to Powerhouse #3), Section 5 (Fairview Dam to Lazy River Lodge), and Section 6 (Fairview Dam to Johnsondale Bridge). In the Lower Kern, trout activity has been good around Keysville, with fish biting on jigs and spinners. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are also active, taking small crankbaits, jigs, and spinners. Catfish are being caught on dip baits, nightcrawlers, and cut bait. As of this report, flows were 244 CFS in the Upper Kern and 324 CFS in the Lower Kern.
