The Bakersfield Firefighters Trout Derby took place last Saturday, and the trout bite was outstanding. Both lakes were stocked with a combined 1,500 pounds of lightning and rainbow trout, and the action didn’t disappoint. The biggest trout weighed in at 5.1 pounds, with countless fish in the 3–4 pound range. Many anglers filled limits, with trophy fish mixed in. Eighteen of the twenty-five tagged fish were caught during the event including the $1000 prize. Trout fishing has remained strong throughout the week on Powerbait, mousetails, spinners, and jigs. Bass are biting on crankbaits, jerkbaits, jigs, and shad-style plastics on the drop-shot. Bluegill are showing at both lakes on wax worms and red worms. Small crappie are coming on live worms.
